Training
The importance of training cannot be overestimated. You MUST have a training plan in place that conforms to the suggested outline online. Failure to train sufficiently could result in a serious situation on the mountains, jeopardising your safety as well as that of your team members.
If in the opinion of the organisers you are not fit to take part you will be excluded from the event.
Penalty
There is a charge of
£100 for challenger cancellations and only truly exceptional circumstances will allow exemption.
Sponsorship
- Authorisation - Activities that take place during working hours must be authorised by your line manager.
- Legality - Try to keep all sponsorship tactics legal!
- Keep it Zibrant - Please maintain the Zibrant brand guidelines at all times when promoting the challenge for sponsorship.
- Communication - Please keep the 3 Peaks Team up-to-date with all sponsorship tactics.
Drivers
- All drivers MUST carry their drivers’ licences throughout the challenge. If the driver holds a photocard licence, the paper counterpart must also be carried.
- Cars will be collected from Inverness airport and teams are to drive directly to the Youth Hostel. Only the nominated driver is permitted to drive the cars provided at any time. Petrol costs will be reimbursed on production of a receipt and will be at cost only.
- The routes from mountain to mountain are strictly mapped out for you. You must not deviate in any way from these routes. There will be checkpoints along the way, which you must stop at. If you miss any of these checkpoints your team will be disqualified.
- During the briefing Drivers will be advised of the driving routes for the challenge and the location of the obligatory driving breaks.
Driving between Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike there will be two half hour obligatory driving breaks as advised by the DVLA.
Driving between Scafell Pike and Snowdon there will be one half hour obligatory driving break as advised by the DVLA.
- Any parking/speeding offences incurred during the challenge will be the drivers’ sole responsibility.
- Drivers are there to drive only! They will not be allowed to climb any of the mountains, this is for your own safety and due to the driver being the only insured person for the car.
The Challenge
- The clock starts from the moment you leave the starting point at the foot of Ben Nevis to the moment your last team member reaches the summit of Snowdon – driving breaks will be deducted from each teams’ total challenge time.
- All Team Leaders and Drivers MUST attend the pre-event briefing at 07:15 on the morning of the challenge (20th September 2007). If both the Team Leader AND the Driver from a team does not attend, the whole team will be disqualified and not allowed to take part in the challenge.
- Each Team will be issued with a Safety Control Card, Team Number for the Team Leader and Team Number for the support vehicle. These must be displayed as detailed at the pre-event safety briefing.
- Each Team Leader will be issued with a Sport Ident Electronic Dibber, which MUST be worn for the duration of the event.
- Teams of walkers MUST stay together at all times when on the mountain. Each team that starts a mountain stage must stay together, visit the checkpoints together, and finish the mountain stage together. We define 'staying together' as being in visual AND audible contact with the walker in front and behind you. At the discretion of the checkpoint staff and support crew, teams disregarding this rule may be disqualified.
- Retirements CAN ONLY be made at a mountain base or road checkpoint. Teams will be considered late or missing until they have handed in their Safety Control Card at a mountain base or road checkpoint.
- Minimum numbers for a team to climb are THREE members. In the case of any further team members retiring en route, the remaining members of the team must wait at the nearest checkpoint until they can make up a ‘scratch team’ of no less than three, or more than seven members.
- Scratch Teams may only be formed at the start of a mountain stage, and not during a mountain stage.
- Teams MUST adhere strictly to the starting times allocated.
- Cut off times have been assigned to mountains to ensure there are enough guides covering all bases. It is imperative that the spread of teams does not become too wide for health and safety as well as logistical reasons.
- A maximum climb time of eight hours has been assigned to Ben Nevis – If you exceed this time, you will have to forfeit the climb at Scafell Pike and drive straight to Snowdon.
- A cut off point will be set on Snowdon for all teams in both groups – if challengers have not started their ascent by 12:00 they will be asked not to proceed.
- In the event of an outbreak of Foot and Mouth and Bird Flu, alternative routes/mountains will be suggested if at all possible.
- If weather conditions pose any threat to the safety of walkers on any mountain or to support vehicles on the driving route, we may impose a foul weather alternative. This will be fully briefed to teams before the event if any such conditions are predicted.
- Acceptance of all applications will be at the discretion of Merseyventure and Zibrant organisers and on signing the entry form all competitors agree to accept these Rules and Conditions governing the event. The organising committee’s decision will be final in any dispute.
RESCUE SERVICES
Merseyventure teams will be in the area throughout the period of the event. If any competitor is unable to continue, the remaining members of the team should bivouac and advise the support crew and next check point via radio or text message. It is essential that in the case of injury, one person stays with the casualty and at least two people go for assistance.
Any team finding another in distress must help by assisting to erect a bothy bag and by seeing that those in distress are comfortably installed. They should ascertain the correct location and advise the nearest checkpoint and support crew. The action will be additional to any information already passed by the members of the team in distress. Suitable time allowance for such actions will be made at the discretion of the organisers.
Rescue signals: Teams should note the following signals that will be used by teams in difficulties:
| Message |
Torch or Whistle |
| Help wanted |
6 flashes/blasts in quick succession followed by a one minute silence |
| Acknowledgement |
3 flashes/blasts in succession followed by a one minute silence. |
* Extenuating circumstances – helping out another team, car break down, injury.
